Croydon pub meet - We may be Croydonians, or we may not be!

02:15 am - Croydon pub meet

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I omitted to plug this for the last couple of months, because I am new to this sort of thing and really a bit rubbish at it.

But anyway - on Tuesday, it's the monthly Croydon SF fan pub meet. It's at the Dog and Bull in Surrey Street, near the Church Street tram stop, from about 7:30pm. We're often to be found in the back bit of the pub if we get in the way of the pub quiz, or sometimes in the private function room upstairs. Just ask at the bar where the science-fiction people are. :¬)

Tue 12th May. Facebook types can find the event here.

Ahhh! You must be Steve, then! You have simultaneously the longest and possibly the least-informative (for its length) profile of anyone on LJ, which must be worthy of some kind of award!

Glad to meet you, any road up, and I hope you decide to come along again in future & maybe even bring along some of the rest of the "Croydon Collective". I think it's a shame that there are lots of different small meetups across London where people simply don't know that the other ones exist.

The Croydon drinkie has been going for about 20y, I believe. At least these days, it's always there & on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

The other one I am almost always at is the "Tun", the London Circle. It's on the first Thursday of the month and has been running since about 1935 - it's the meeting Arthur C Clarke wrote about in the "Tales from the White Hart" in 1957, when it was already 20-odd years old. Currently it happens in the basement of the Melton Mowbray pub on High Holborn, near Chancery Lane station. You should try to bring the LOTNA lot along!

Is this still going? My wife and I are looking to expand our social circle in Croydon and it seems to be a good thing to attend. We run the Broken Drummers Discworld Group that meets one a month in Paddington.

Oh yes, very much so!

On the other hand, if you're not in Croydon, there are certainly closer regular meets. The biggest is the "Tun", sometimes known as the London Circle. It's on the first Thursday of the month, every month, and has been since 1948 or so. Currently, we meet in the basement bar of the Melton Mowbray pub on High Holborn, near Chancery Lane Tube station. It kicks off about 7 but people start trickling in about half 5 or so, I believe.

But saying that, you'd be entirely welcome at the Croydon meet!

Most excellent. We live just the other side of East Croydon Station so that'll be great. What time does this kick off? Takes me an hour or so to get back from London in the evening.

Tempted by the larger one, but the Drummers meet on the 1st Monday and I doubt either my wallet or liver could cope with another do on the same week.

Oh, cool!

Times? I am not very local to Croydon myself, despite a CR4 postcode, so I am not all that sure. I tend to aim for 8:30PM or so; some may be there earlier. I doubt much before about 8PM, though.

As far as the Drummers - might I suggest, tentatively, that you sound people out re moving venue for a sort of test month and the whole lot of you join us at the Tun? Try it one month or something first yourself if you like. It's a welcoming and very informal sort of affair - there is no speaker, no guests, no door charge or anything. We have a few little sub-groups that sort of grab a table or two of their own - in fact, one could break down a lot of the regulars into specific subgroups that don't mingle much - it's funny like that. We'd welcome new faces!

Another regular monthly thing that's open to all is the BSFA meeting. It tends to be on the 4th Wednesday of the month, I believe - don't quote me on that - and it's free but you're kind of expected to buy a raffle ticket. There are a dozen or so free books raffled each month. It's more formal - there is an author or other luminary interviewed each month. Starts earlier - 7:00PM sharp, I think - and breaks up about 9:30PM or so. Each month, a bunch of interested people go along with the guest and the interviewer for a meal afterwards, usually in a Thai place near Victoria that's pretty good.

It's in the upstairs bar in the Antelope pub, Eaton Terrace, near Sloane Square Tube.

Hey, no poaching! We're quite happy at the Monkey Puzzle thank you, since there's around 20 of us at a time we take over one end of the pub and have it to ourselves. Took us long enough to find a decent pub that everyone can get to easily, that everyone likes and that serves decent beer, food and has a very welcoming staff (Gary the landlord would never forgive us).

I'll mention it to the rest of the crew certainly to see if they want to go along to the one at the Tun as well, few are actual SF fans as such though, most are just part of the Discworld community or family of same and have been pulled in. One of our regulars goes to the Tolkien Society in the Penerel's Oak as well.

8pm onwards suits me, gives me a chance to get home, change and relax, we can pop over earlier and get some food at the pub actually if we wish, it's only 10-15 mins away. Hope to see you at the next session then.
